Futures Expo

I trust that our students and families took advantage of the many resources and professional services available on Monday at the St Peter’s College Futures Expo. Over the last few years we have worked diligently to ensure that all students can find the Pathway that they wish to follow at St Peter’s College. Our philosophy that we "educate the whole child" also extends to meeting the needs of all of our students in regard to their aspirations and career path, whether that means University, TAFE or a Vocational focus. It was pleasing to see so many of our students researching the subjects on offer in the VCE, VET and VCAL before they now make their all important subject selections for 2016 over the next week.

I acknowledge the work of our Careers Co-ordinators Ms Dillon and Ms Cardamone, the Curriculum Executive, Learning Coaches and Learning Advisors for the preparation and presentations that made this day a great success.

Parents & Friends Association- Annual General Meeting

At last week’s Parent and Friends Association Meeting the following parents were reappointed to office bearer positions. Mrs Ellinor Allen as President, Mrs Karen Walker as Treasurer and Mrs Mairi-Anne Macartney as Secretary. I thank them for their continued generosity and leadership in support of the College.

The Parents and Friends continue to do an outstanding job in supporting the needs of our students, having recently provided funds to our Chess Club for more board games and to the Student Representative Council for other identified student needs and services. All parents are welcome to attend our Parents and Friends Meetings held twice a term. See this newsletter or our website for times, dates and location.  

Staffing

I farewell and thank Mr Michael Mulcahy, an integration aide in our Learning Enrichment Department who will be taking up a position in the area of Disability Training.

I also welcome Mrs Mary Martin who takes up the position of Financial Accountant at the College. The continued growth of St Peter’s has seen the need to expand the College in our Finance Department and Mrs Martin’s extensive experience in chartered accountancy will provide support to our Business Manager, Mr Phillip Mustey, as we ensure the sustainable growth of our College.

Trinity Family Foundation

It was pleasing to be able to send off a cheque this week to the Trinity Family Foundation for $3166.00. This has been raised by students and staff on St Peter’s Day and will allow the foundation to continue to support much needed services in the Diocese of Sale. Formally known as the Bishop’s Family Foundation. Trinity Family has provided funds in recent years for family counselling and provision of  services for the victims of sexual assaults, as well providing support for pregnancy advice and early parenting programs.

City Life 

Our staff and students continue to support the City Life Cafe in Frankston as it distributes meals and food parcels on a weekly basis to families and individuals who are struggling to support themselves. Each week senior students from both the East and West Campus volunteer as participants in our Social justice and Outreach Programs which include assisting with Soup Vans in the city, Oznam House in Flemington as well as the weekly trips to City Life Cafe co-ordinated by Mr McGrath.

Our faith inspires a view of the World and respect for humanity which requires us to respond, to act when we see we can make a difference. It is uplifting to see that so many of our students are moved in this way to serve our wider community.

Practice Examinations 

The purpose of practice examinations is to ensure that each student who plans to sit a VCE exam feels confident that they are well prepared and able to achieve the very best possible result. The College has therefore arranged Practice Examinations during the upcoming September school holidays.

Any student who is currently undertaking a Unit 3 /4 VCE study will be required to participate in practice exams in each subject. These trial exams provide valuable exam technique practise together with timely feedback from staff to assist all students in preparing for their final Year 12 Exams.
These practice examinations will take place in the College Hall under strict examination conditions. As such students will be required to wear full College uniform. 

Attendance will be compulsory for all eligible students in the assigned periods. Students will be required to remain in the Multipurpose Hall for the entire allocated time and will not be able to exit the Examination room prior to the conclusion of their Examination. Formal VCAA Examination conditions will be applied. Students will need to attend with the correct approved materials such as pens pencils and calculators (where appropriate). Subject Selection Process – The Next Step

Thank you to all those students and parents who took the time to speak to staff and listen to the presentations at the College Futures Expo. Being well informed and selecting the correct subjects is a positive start towards achieving a fulfilling academic package. From all accounts parents found the information informative and clarified many misconceptions. The next step is to submit subject selections on line via Web Preferences. All students from Years 8 - 11 are required to submit subject selections by Friday 7th August. 

For Year 10 students and parents who may still have questions regarding the VCE Pathways a further information afternoon is available. Curriculum Leaders and Careers advisors will be available in the Library at West Campus, Discovery Centre and at East Campus between 3.15 – 5.00pm on Monday 3rd and Tuesday 4th August. Alternatively, parents are encouraged to call to speak further with any of the presenters from our Expo to clarify concerns. Please remember that student choice is the driver behind classes that run, staffing and timetabling. Getting the subjects selection correct at this stage is vital. Changes to an Academic Program are limited so please take the time to think carefully and make wise choices now.

Futures Expo

The Futures Expo was a wonderful success for our students as they were able to chat with teachers about subject choice.  With a number of very exciting new Subjects on offer for 2016, student choice has never been better.  

Furthermore, representatives from other educational institutions and industry were able to talk about courses and careers that are on offer after students leave St Peter’s College.

Hopefully, students left the day with greater clarity about what they want to do in the short term and perhaps the long term also. These goals will help them focus on their studies and contributes to greater motivation to achieve sound results in the classroom.

I ask parents to chat with your child in the lead up to submitting subject choice.  The best guide is for the student to choose:

•    Subjects that they enjoy;
•    Subjects in which they are successful;
•    Subjects that will assist them in a later course that the student has       chosen.

This criteria will help to keep your child engaged at school.

Year 9 Student Wellbeing Activity – Risk Taking

On Tuesday, the Year 9 students watched some educational theatre “Cheap Thrills” that tackled the issue of risk taking especially surrounding alcohol and drug use.  

Teenagers are typically more likely to engage in risk taking behaviour.  This in itself is not a bad thing.  Students who take risks are much more likely to learn and develop skills.  Our greatest leaders, adventurers, inventors and explorers have all been risk takers.

The real issue becomes risk management.  This is not the elimination of risk but the ability to minimise the negative consequences when things go wrong…as they inevitably will from time to time.  

Please chat with your son or daughter about what they learnt from the session.  Help them be aware of the dangers of their behaviour.  

We don’t want to kill curiosity or eliminate risk taking, but we do want them to have sound knowledge of the facts and dangers.  Finally, we want them to develop good judgment when it comes to deciding what risks to take, what to avoid and how to minimise negative outcomes.

East Campus News

Futures Expo and Subject Selection

On Monday our annual Futures Expo was held at the West Campus and commenced the process for subject selection which involves all students from Year 8 - 12.  It was a fantastic day with exhibitions from various external tertiary providers as well as from subject areas here at the College, including NEW VET offerings. This was supported by seminars throughout the day to assist students and their families in choosing subjects for next year and future pathways.

I would like to thank all of the teachers who went above and beyond expectations in supporting this event as well as our House Captains who operated the Registration Desk throughout the day.  If you have not received your log on code and password to complete your online subject selection please contact the College office immediately.  All subject selections are required to be completed by Friday the 7th of August.

Homework Club and VCE Study Zone

It can be hard to remain on top of homework and study commitments through the longer winter terms.  That is why it is important to develop good homework and study habits, seek assistance early and not leave it until the last minute.

Homework Club operates in the Discovery Centre every Monday through to Thursday from 3.30-430pm. Staff from the Learning Enrichment Centre are on hand to supervise and offer assistance and support to those students struggling with a subject area, topic or across multiple areas.  VCE Study Zone operates every Wednesday upstairs in the Lyons Building (LLA5) and is staffed by subject teachers, many of whom are VCE teachers.  This a independent study place where students can meet to form study groups or work individually.  From time to time, seminars are held with a specific VCE focus.  Tonight is one such occasion with VCE English teachers looking at structuring and writing essays in VCE English.

SUPPORTING BACKPACKS 4 VIC KIDS  CHILDREN GOING INTO FOSTER CARE

Often children are placed quickly into foster care without much more than what they are wearing at the time. 

They need our help.

Backpacks 4 Vic Kids is a Cranbourne based community group but supports children in foster care throughout Victoria.  They are a registered non-profit community group run by volunteers. 

They assist by providing quality Back Packs and Nappy Bags to children ages 0-17 years entering in foster care in Victoria. Backpacks or Nappy Bags contain size and gender appropriate contents including essential items (such as toiletries), clothing, pyjamas, a torch, blanket and a toy or activity which will belong to the child and will stay with them should they be relocated.

As a community I think we can assist Backpacks 4 Vic Kids in providing the items or backpacks to help support the children being placed into foster care. I couldn’t imagine what it would be like for these children to be placed into care & not having anything of their own. We can assist by making a small difference to these children lives. 

If you would like to help by providing a Backpack or Nappy Bag with essential items & something to love (list of items provided) or you could supply some items and we will put together some bags here. Our aim is 50 Backpacks or Nappy Bags.

We have until end of Term 3, Friday 18th September. Items can be left at College Reception. If you would like more information or have any questions please don’t hesitate contacting me.

College Arts Captain, Hannah Kyberd takes to the stage in the PLOS Production of Legally Blonde now showing at the Frankston Arts Centre with performances this week from Wednesday to Saturday. (For tickets contact the Arts Centre on 9784 1060)

Hannah who credits her love of all things Theatre, Dancing, Singing and Acting to her Mum, is relishing her role in the Chorus of PLOS Latest Production.

“I don’t really know why I started dancing and singing, who or what prompted it but I know that since I was 7 Years old my Mum has supported me with all that extra running around involved in my dance and singing lessons”.

It has been a bit of a juggling act this year for Hannah, between her Year 12 studies, her role as College Art Captain and rehearsals for Legally Blonde, which first started in February. “What has made this achievable for me, is that everyone at PLOS has been very welcoming and supportive”

Hannah regularly performs vocally for the College at Assemblies and Mass.

SIS Theatresports

Last Tuesday, a group of wonderfully talented students braved the SIS Theatresports Championships at St John's College. Battling it out against 15 other schools, the students were exceptionally creative, using their improvisation skills to deliver some very entertaining performances.

From the West campus, our junior team was represented by Naomi Hind, Isabella De Graaff, Kate Cooke, Caitlyn Pearson and Mikayla Van Der Velden. Our senior team was represented by Jye Clarke, Darcy Uhlenberg, Zane Hyde, Daman O'Loughlin and Baylee Matheson.

They missed out on the finals by 1 point and received a special award for their use of a prop during one of their performances. Well done to all competitors!

Religious Education

The Pope and his 2 Mates

We, at times live in a hungry, angry and lonely world. Our students regular visit City Life Cafe, Oznam House and the Soup Vans. The second reading at Mass this week says, "Bear with one another charitably, in complete selflessness, gentleness and patience." After this there is there is the Gospel story of Jesus feeding the 5000.  Jesus feeds them and looks after them.

So thinking about a hungry, lonely and angry world, let us look to Pope Francis. Pope Francis is embraced by 2 of his Argentinian friends.  One is Rabbi Abraham Skorka and the other is Muslim leader Omar Abboud. This meeting took place in Jerusalem last year.  For those who have followed Pope Francis over the past couple of years, it will not surprise you that this was much more than a photo opportunity.  The Pope, the Muslim leader, and the Rabbi are actually good friends. Their friendship is fed on a diet of trust and openness. That's a diet the world needs more of.

St Agatha's Parish News

On Sunday 16th August Bishop O’Regan will be visiting our Parish to celebrate Mass at St Thomas the Apostle Church Cranbourne East at 9.30am and at the 6.00pm Mass at St Agatha’s Church.  

We welcome Avinash George who is with us until the end of the year as part of his formation for the priesthood.  We are reminded to continue to pray for Vocations to the Priesthood and Religious Life from our Parish, and especially for those who may be discerning God’s call for them at this time.

Junior RCIA, for students aged 12 to 18 who would like to be Baptised or who would like to complete their Sacraments, will begin on Sunday 2nd August at 9.30am at the Parish Office.  Please contact the Parish Office for further information on 5996 1985.
