Pat Grant Shield

On a very windy Thursday afternoon the East and West Campus played off for the Pat Grant Shield. The competition is named in honour of long serving staff member Mr Pat Grant who was a keen cricket coach at St Peter’s College for many years. Football, netball and basketball games were played between the two campuses with the West Campus victorious in all three competitions with the scores outlined below.

Junior Girls Netball: West Campus 39 defeated East Campus 10.

Boys Basketball:  West Campus 39 drew East Campus 39 - in overtime West Campus rallied to a 48-42 victory.

The matches were played in good spirit and to a very high standard which is a credit to all the participants.  I want to thank the respective coaches for their preparation of the students involved and our Sports Managers Mr De Goldi and Miss Thomas, who organised the event. At the end of the year the second round of the 2016 Pat Grant Shield will be held giving the East Campus the opportunity to reverse the results in a competition of the summer sports.

St Peter’s Dinner & St Peter’s Day

The annual St Peter’s Dinner will take place this Friday Night in the Multi-purpose Hall, which with the added bonus of having heaters installed since last June, all staff and their partners are looking forward to an opportunity to come together and celebrate who we are as a College Community. The highlight of the night is the formal recognition of those staff who have contributed both 10 and 20 years service to the development of our College.

Following our dinner on Friday night we will continue the celebration of the Feast Day of St Peter on Tuesday of next week. At that time our College Community will stop our normal school activities to celebrate a Thanksgiving Mass lead by Fr Denis and Fr Joseph for each campus, followed by a range of fun activities prepared by the Student Representative Councils. All proceeds raised during St Peter’s Day go towards the Trinity Family foundation, the charitable family trust of the Sale Diocese, which operates to provide funding for a variety of services to support families in Gippsland and the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne. 

Prayers for Orlando

As the tragedy of Orlando, Florida unfolds we keep the families of the innocent victims and all those who been injured in this senseless crime in our prayers and thoughts. We pray and entrust them into the care of our compassionate God.

East Campus News

Semester 2 has commenced this week and for students this is one of two opportunities over the coming month to reflect on their progress throughout Semester 1. The other is of course when reports are available to access.

It is important for students to not only reflect on areas where they have not done so well, but also to celebrate their achievements. Students as a collective often groan about goal setting processes, yet this approach can be a very affirming process, particularly when you are able to tick off successes.

Growth in learning need not necessarily be measured in grades alone and it is only our students, in honest reflection, who are able to self-judge their improvements. The resilient learner, one who can bounce back from adversity and learn from previous mistakes, and who shows determination in striving for improvement next time, is the student who is more likely to realise improvement, whether this be in the short, medium or long-term.

I urge students to take the time to reflect on their progress or otherwise over semester one and commit to further levels of growth in understanding across their learning program.

Year 10 Work Experience

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ms Cardamone and the Year 10 teachers who went on visits to our Year 10 students, as they experienced a week of work experience. There was some wonderful reports back from staff who went on visits and saw our students in action. There is nothing quite like a hands on approach to learning and it is hoped that through this experience a number of learnings have taken place.

For some there will be an affirmation of their intended career pathway. For others it will be back to the drawing board as their experience will have confirmed their chosen pathway is not what they expected. For others school may not be as bad as they thought.

The Futures Expo in early Term 3 will be a wonderful opportunity to seek guidance and open up students eyes to the endless possibilities that exist for their study pand career pathways.

Year 11s are Fit to Drive!

Last Thursday our Year 11 students travelled to the West Campus for a Student well-being day. The sessions were broken up into two discrete themes under the overall umbrella of harm minimisation. The first session, run by outside facilitators from “Fit to Drive”, was focussed on safety on the roads. The workshop experience, supported students to make good decisions when faced with risky driving situations, both as passengers, and in terms of their future driving safety. The Year 11 Workshops included: 

  • Providing opportunities to rehearse behaviours and problem solving strategies

  • Using scenarios to stimulate discussion, to consider the costs and benefits of safe and risky behaviour, and as a vehicle for rehearsing safe behaviours, planning strategies, problem solving, etc.

  • Providing opportunities for interaction and sharing ideas – role plays, and pair, small, and large group discussion.

The second workshop for the day focussed on Safe Partying with the key message to “think before you do”, and emphasizing the importance of having supportive friends to ensure safety and minimise risk.

St Peter’s Day 

A reminder that this is a compulsory day for all students. Students may wear suitable and appropriate casual clothes for the day. A reminder that students will be required to be at school on time to ensure travel to St Agatha’s runs smoothly and that the College Mass commences on time at the scheduled 9.30am. Further information regarding the background and intent of St Peter’s Day can be found elsewhere in this edition.

Cross Installation

An important and significant installation occurred at East Campus on Friday afternoon. As a part of the landscaping design at the front of the College, a cross was installed. This is a significant milestone and an important historical moment for our College.

The cross symbolises, and recognises, the significance of Christ in our lives. We are a Christ centred school and the cross is an important symbol emphasizing our Catholic identity. For many years to come it will stand proudly as a sign of Christ’s presence in our College.

A reminder that this coming Friday it is a Student Free Day to enable the process of reports to be facilitated.

West Campus News

Student Reports

It is a short week for students with the Queen’s Birthday Holiday and Student Free Day on Friday to allow staff to help prepare the student reports.  A lot of work is put into reporting on our students so that parents can participate in the educational process of their child.  The more interest that you show in your child’s education, the higher correlation with academic success.  Please ensure that at the end of term, you ensure that you can log on to the parent portal and access your child’s report.  If you have trouble, we ask that you contact the College Office and we will ensure that we assist you to either access the student report electronically or will organise you a hard copy.

Year 10 Keys Please 

On Wednesday, the Year 10 students will participate in the 'Keys Please' presentation.  

This contains important information for you child as they embark on the 120 hours of Learner Driving Practice prior to going for their Probationary Licence.  We have some more information in this newsletter to assist you in engaging with your child about this important activity that they will undertake.

St. Peter’s Day – Tuesday, 21 June

This is a special day on the College calendar, where we celebrate the Feast Day of our Patron, Saint Peter, and recognise our Catholic Ethos.

The Student Representative Council have been planning and organising activities to ensure the day is successful. Please note the following:

  • The day commences with normal Tutor Group at 8.45am, followed by a Campus Mass in the Multi-Purpose Hall. The Mass is a very important part of the day’s celebrations and is therefore compulsory.

  • Students arriving late and therefore missing the Mass will NOT be allowed to partake in all of the activities for the rest of the day.

  • After the Mass, the day will consist of a number of activities provided by AusCorp Amusement; including a bucking football, gladiator challenge, human wrecking ball, zorb soccer, bungee run and dunking machine. Each House is also organizing an activity including food stalls and there is a talent quest at the end of the day.

  • The Parents and Friends Association will kindly provide a free BBQ sausage sizzle and can of soft drink for all students on the day.

  • Some of the activities are free, whilst some activities and food stalls will cost a small amount of money, with the proceeds going to charity. Students are advised to bring loose change on the day.

  • The day will conclude with dismissal at 3pm.

  • This is a compulsory school day and students should not be arriving late or departing early.

  • Students who are absent are required to bring a parental note the next day.

  • Students are permitted to wear casual clothing on the day. Please wear sensible, warm clothing and be prepared for cold weather. Open toed footwear is not permitted.

  • Current St. Peter’s students ONLY are permitted on the premises on the day unless formally invited to attend.

This really is a day of celebration and an opportunity for the whole student and staff community to enjoy each other’s company in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

City of Casey Youth Action Committee

The City of Casey’s Youth Action Committee (YAC) is now open for applications.
 
After a very successful 2015-2016 which saw the YAC deliver the very first Casey in Colour fun run which raised much needed funds for the Reach Foundation, this year’s YAC will again offer young people the opportunity to not only have their voice heard but to put their ideas into action.

The aim of the Casey Youth Action Committee is to empower young people as genuine leaders in their community. This is an opportunity for you to:

  • Deliver projects on the topics and issues which are important to you

  • Develop your leadership skills and take part in leadership training

  • Work with other like-minded and passionate young people

  • Learn more about your community and local government

  • Represent the views and ideas of young people and influence decision-making 

Meetings are held once every three weeks.

Holocaust and Synagogue Excursion

Friday June 10

Year 11 students from the East and West Campus, escorted by teachers, visited The Jewish Holocaust Centre and a synagogue in Elsternwick. The students were divided into two groups, so whilst one group was at the synagogue, the other group was at the Holocaust Museum.

The visit to the Jewish Holocaust Centre was broken into three parts. At first we saw a film on the persecution of the Jewish people. The film gave an overview of what the Jewish people endured during World War ll and portrayed man’s inhumanity to man during this time. The film presented the key facts, the extent of the concentration camps, and how widespread they were in Europe throughout the war.

After the film we were introduced to Irma, who at eighty six years old, told us her story of how she survived the holocaust.  Irma was only eight years old when she came home from school to find that her Jewish mother and father had disappeared, she cried for two days straight until she was eventually found by her aunty and her catholic husband who risked their lives to hide her from the Nazis, which she tells us, she is eternally grateful for. 

As a young teenager Irma was finally captured while going for a walk and was taken to work in a factory. A few years later Irma was taken by the Gestapo to a camp where she was eventually released by allied troops after which time she came to Australia as an 18 year old. In those first few years after her parents disappearance, Irma tells us that she found it impossible to concentrate in school as one of her classmates went missing each day, and she considers her whole secondary schooling experience to have been destroyed by the Nazis. Despite all she endured, she still celebrates and cherishes her Jewish heritage.  

She spoke to us about her first hand experiences in Dresden, Germany and later her life in a ghetto/camp in Czechoslovakia. Her story was a chilling tale of the loss of family and friends, and the many hardships she endured, including having her tonsils removed without an anaesthetic!

One could not have imagined the life she led when we were first introduced to Irma. 

Religious Education News cont.

It was a great privilege to hear such a personal heart-warming recount of the war from one of the last survivors. It is something that I am sure will stay in our minds forever.

Groups were then shown particular exhibits in the museum. The last part of the visit was a tour of the Centre. The Centre had a number of feature displays of the many aspects of Jewish life during the Holocaust. From the Star of David, to Ghettos and then on to the various concentration camps. The images were very graphic and confronting.  
At the end of the tour two of our students were asked to light a candle of peace and place it with the Jewish Holocaust’s eternal flame as a symbol of our respect.

 Although the excursion was extremely confronting, and at times very sad, we learnt a very important lesson. There is ‘No Race’, at the end of the day we are all human beings. 

At the synagogue the Head Rabbi spoke to us about the Jewish Religion, the way of life for a Jewish person, and the many features of the synagogue. The Rabbi gave a real insight into mainstream Jewish life. In pointing out the main features of the synagogue he told us of the importance of their holy scrolls. At the end of the visit we were able to view the scrolls and appreciate the artwork that goes into to each scroll.

Overall, the excursion gave us a great insight into the Jewish Religion and the Holocaust and will leave us with a lasting impression.

St Agatha's Parish News

Dear Parishioners

We thank Fr Peter for his presence in our Parish over the last six months. He has been a wonderful gift of service and friendship to us all at St Agatha’s.  We wish him well and God’s blessings at his new Parish in Warragul.

Thank you to the parishioners who have contributed to the success of the Stewardship Program in giving so generously of your support and time. We will learn the final results this Wednesday evening at the Stewardship Social Night.  All the volunteers who helped are invited to attend. 

Please note there will be no Thursday Evening Masses while there is only one priest at St Agatha’s.

Please remember to keep the children who will be Confirmed next weekend and their families in your prayers.

Sacrament of Confirmation Ceremonies

Bishop Patrick will be Confirming 86 children this Friday 17th June at 7.30pm and Saturday 18th June at 11.00am.   A reminder to parents and children to arrive 20 minutes before Mass and remember to bring your completed Confirmation Card.

Dear Parishioners

Over the past two months a lot of time and parish commitment has gone into the preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation, and the Stewardship Program. This week, both come to their conclusion. On Wednesday evening at the Stewardship Social Night we will learn the final results of our Stewardship Program, and all who have been involved in various ways during the Program are invited to attend. I thank the many people who have been so generous with their time and have committed themselves to ensuring the success of this Program.

I also invite every family to give time this week in your family prayer to pray for those who are to be Confirmed next weekend by Bishop Pat O’Regan. These young people are already valued members of our Parish and contribute so much to the richness of our Parish life. We pray that God will prepare them well for the great gift they are to receive, the fullness of the Holy Spirit.

RCIA Sponsors

Have you thought about becoming a Sponsor? The RCIA requires Sponsors to journey with RCIA inquiries.  A sponsor is a practicing Catholic who has received the three Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation), who is a spiritual companion and support on the journey, and serves as a mentor in the Christian life. A sponsor actively participates, by attending regular meetings, and helps the RCIA candidate to become familiar with the Mass as they attend together. The sponsor talks regularly with the RCIA participant about his or her ongoing process of faith development.

Author Mark Greenwood Enchants Year 7 students at East Campus.

Year 7 students were spellbound by visiting author, Mark Greenwood’s stories of iconic Australian figures and historical events last Tuesday. Their entranced responses were a reminder of the importance and power of storytelling.

Work Experience

Year 10 Students completed their Work Experience Program last week, June 6th to10th.
So many different opportunities where taken up by our Students, such as:
Aged Care, Business, CSIRO, Dental, Fitness, I.T, Kindergarten, Law, Pharmacy, Sport, Teaching, University, and Veterinary.

A number of students have received employment opportunities whilst many more Students now know what it is like to be at work and they now should have a good sense of what they want to do when they finish school.

The next step will be to attend our FUTURES EXPO on July 26th to help map out their study pathway!

Mr Damien Cardona joined the East Campus of the College in 2015. Damien will share with us a little about his journey to teaching at St Peter’s College. He will also speak about Art & Technology in the Bishop Jeremiah Coffey Centre for Creativity. Damien comes to St Peter’s College with vast experience and A passion for the teaching of Visual Arts, Wood Technology, Electronics, Visual Communications. 

Evening will include a Tour of our Bishop Jeremiah Coffey, Centre for Creativity facilities.
