Welcome College Magenta

This week 25 students and 3 staff arrived from Magenta College in New Caledonia for their first visit to St Peter’s College. The students ranging in ages from 13 to16 have a full program over the next week, including a visit to the Melbourne Central Business District, to take in some of our cultural sights and exploring the highlights of our local region. The Exchange Program with Magenta College is now in its second year with our students having already made two trips to Noumea to practise their french language and sample the wonderful hospitality and culture of the New Caledonian people.

SIS Athletics Division A

Our Athletics Team, comprising of both East and West students, participated in the SIS Division A Carnival at the Lakeside Athletics Centre last Thursday. Our students performed well finishing 5th overall with only a handful of points separating 3rd, 4th and 5th. 

I applaud the overall participation by our team and commend the many fine individual performances headed by Shahd Mohamed from Romero House. My thanks to Sports Co-ordinators Mr Justin DeGoldi and Miss Chloe Thomas and the PE staff, who not only prepared our own students but also conducted a very professional carnival for the SIS member schools.

Year 7 Maths

On Friday of last week the Year 7 Maths Team changed their learning environment from the classroom to the gymnasium as a means of enhancing our students ability to apply their learning of percentages to new and different contexts. Using the key skills of critical thinking, creativity, innovation and problem solving, students worked in teams to successfully apply what they had learned to a range of tasks with great enthusiasm. In an ever changing world where technology is bringing universal knowledge at the click of a button the importance of the skills of learning, outlined above, will underpin our student’s success in whatever pathway they choose.

St Peter’s College Uniform Sub Committee

Last week the SPC Uniform Sub-committee of the Parents & Friends Association met for the first time, as part of the monthly meeting of our P&F. This committee consists of students, Emily Hoyle (East), Britney Phillips (West), staff members, Annette Marschner (West), Emily McClelland (East) and Marketing Manager April Hampson along with parents Bec St Mart, Jodie Redman and Naomi Bartlett. The role of the sub-committee will be to consider issues raised by parents, staff and students in relation to our SPC Uniform Policy and make recommendations to the College Board, always cognisant of the financial impact that any changes to uniform will have on our families.  

R U OK Day

R U OK day brings into focus mental health issues that many in our community are facing on a daily basis. As part of our Pastoral Program, students will take some time to work through a series of activities that promote connection between individuals and also a sense of belonging to their community.

Research has shown that a strong connection to a community, and the understanding that others are looking out for them, are important factors in building mental health and resilience for each person. Asking 'are you okay' in a meaningful way, as part of our regular conversations with members of our community, is a starting point to a stronger and healthier community.

Valedictory Dinner

This year the introduction of our first graduating class from the East Campus will see the staging of two Valedictory Dinners at the Function Centre at the Cranbourne Race Track. Held on consecutive evenings this first class venue will provide a wonderful environment for our students and families to celebrate the end of their school days and also at the same time ease the organizational and logistical workload incurred by our school staff when the event has been staged in our College Hall.

The West Campus Valedictory will be held on Tuesday the 18th of October ,commencing with the Graduation Mass at 6pm at St Agatha’s and on the following night the 19th of October, the East Campus Valedictory will also commence at St Agatha's before moving to the function centre for a 7pm start to dinner. Due to the relative size of each graduating class and the capacity of the new venue there are differences in the number of tickets that can be allocated to each family at the West and East Campus.

Tickets for the West Campus Valedictory will be allocated on the basis of a student and two tickets for immediate family members and at the East Campus on the basis of a sytudent and 4 tickets for immediate family members. We expect this difference to even out as the East Campus Year 12 group grows in size over the next few years. All queries in relation to ticket sales and seating arrangements should be directed to our Marketing Manager, Mrs April Hampson.

East Campus Payments

As of Monday, 5th September 2016, East Campus office staff are able to process all payment types. Credit Card, EFT/BPay are still our preferred method of payment, however, we will accept cash payments from this date.

Note: Please DO NOT send large sums of cash to school with your child (such as payment of Education Fees).  Such payments must be made at the office by Parents/Guardians only.

Migrant Mass

This is a mass for the whole diocese so students from both Campuses are welcome to attend with their families. They are also invited to bring along the flag of their country of origin, to be displayed during mass and a traditional meal to share afterwards.

East Campus News

The sun has begun to shine and there is a notable lift in the spirits and step of both staff and students. This feeling of positivity could also be as a result of the focus on Wellbeing Week. This was launched on September 8th at our Campus Assembly with a presentation on R U OK day.

The concept and message behind R U OK day is that we, each and every one of us, can make a difference to anyone who is struggling. How? By checking in with them about how they are going.

Another key message presented, is that no matter how great we may look, we can be doing it tough and it’s OK to let others know that.

The final message outlined was that it is not okay to cause others to struggle and that violence in any sort of relationship is not okay.

A range of activities have and continue to be run over the coming week to raise awareness to the importance of well-being, these include: Random Acts of Kindness Day, Positive Post-it Day, Something special for Teachers Day, I am grateful for …. Day, Burn the Blues Day and Affirmations.

Student Wellbeing is a critical component to the development of the whole person and is significant in ensuring academic growth is maximised. At St Peter’s College our Pastoral Program, including the Vertical House System, Student Leadership structure and the support structures in place, aim to ensure students develop the strategies and resilience to deal with life’s uncertainties.

Student Leadership

Year 11 Students participated in a Leadership Training Day on Monday. This is an exciting time for all Year 11 Students as it signals the commencement of our leadership election process for 2017. It is also a significant time in the growth of the East Campus as only for the second time have students experienced this Student Leadership Process. The day commenced with opening student’s minds to the concept of leadership and specifically the significance of servant leadership as a model to which we should all aspire to. Role models such as Jesus, Peter, Mother Teresa and Nelson Mandela were highlighted for their significant contributions and example, they are to the model of servant leadership. Students unpacked their own understanding of leadership as well as exploring how personality traits can influence the style of leadership.

The highlight of the day was in the afternoon where a Q & A session was run with some of the current Year 12 Studdnt Leaders. These current leaders spoke articulately about their experiences this year as well as offering words of wisdom to our Year 11 Students. It is important at this point in the school year to acknowledge our Foundation College Leaders for the terrific example they have set, not just across this year, but in all of the formation years.

The nomination process for College Leaders for 2017 takes place this week with speeches, interviews and voting to be conducted next week. Students were also presented with the new leadership structure, which will be in operation next year. This will from 2017, incorporate College Sports Captains into the current structure. The SRC has also been re-vamped with the opportunity for more student voice across the whole College, as opposed to being weighted heavily around Year 12 Students. Forum Leaders

Forum Leaders would be elected based on Year Levels rather than Tutor Groups. These elections would occur after House Captains have been elected. Students from Years 7 to 12 in each House would nominate for the position of Year Level House Forum Leader (eg. Year 7 Assisi House Captain).  The House Forum would be made up of the following students:

  • Female House Captain (Year 11 or 12 Student)
  • Male House Captain (Year 11 or 12 Student)
  • Senior House Forum Leader (Year 11 or 12 Student depending on the year level of House Captains)
  • Year 10 House Forum Leader 
  • Year 9 House Forum Leader
  • Year 8 House Forum Leader
  • Year 7 House Forum Leader
  • Up to 5 Forum Leaders appointed at the discretion of the House Leader.

Leadership is a significant stepping stone to a successful pathway in life. Leadership is also critical to the ongoing development of the East Campus. It is not surprising that Student Leaders are often the most successful in terms of academic achievement, this has much to do with the skills and confidence gained from the opportunities presented. I encourage students to have the courage to step out of the shadow and put their hand up for a leadership position. The opportunities are plentiful.

West Campus News

FOOTY COLOURS DAY

Tuesday -13th September

  • Students to come dressed wearing a jumper/jersey/polo of the footy team of their choice (any code-eg. Australian Rules, Rugby Union, Rugby League, Soccer). If they wear a Footy Guernsey, they must wear the PE Shorts/Tracksuit pants 
  • Students who want to wear a football scarf or beanie must wear this with full PE uniform
  • Any student in footy colours is to make a gold coin donation to the Bishop Epalle School in the Solomon Islands

Otherwise full College Uniform must be worn.

  • Lunchtime activities will include the Augustine House Feed the Hippo Footy Handball Competition. There will also be a Table Tennis Exhibition Match in the Hall. 

R U OK? Day

West Campus will mark R U OK? Day with a number of activities that will begin Wellbeing Week.  We appreciate the work of our Student Wellbeing Leader, Ms Anita Carter and the Wellbeing Team in promoting the importance of good Mental Health and personal Wellbeing. We will have a daily Wellbeing Theme and a number of ways we can contribute to the Wellbeing of all members of our College Community. Students will be promoting activities in Tutor Group and I encourage parents to take up some of these ideas and ask their child if they are OK? Click Here:

Students Signing In & Out of School

Students are to use their student card when signing in and out.  This makes the process quicker and easier for the office staff.  For health and safety reasons, students must always sign in at reception and never leave school grounds early without parental permission and signing out.

Signing In

Notes or phone call from parents is required.  Otherwise we assume that a child is late without parental permission and as such will be given a lunchtime detention.

Signing Out

Students should not call or text parents/guardians to pick them up if not feeling well. Instead, they should go to sick bay and administration staff will call on their behalf.  We can then ensure that the student is ready and waiting at the front office for collection and we know whom to expect.

Parents are also reminded of 'communications from home' section in the Student Record Book. If you do not know at the start of the day what time your child is to be collected, you are welcome to call the office with as much notice as you can afford.

Office staff will then write up a grey slip (give to student at recess or lunch) and have the student in the office waiting with their bag for the appropriate person to collect the student at the agreed time

SIS Chess Champions

Congratulations to our students on winning the SIS Chess Championship on Wednesday, 7th September.  Not only did these boys compete on a student free day, but they excelled in representing their College against the best and brightest students from a number of other schools in our region. It is a credit to them to be the first students from St Peter’s College to win this trophy.  

Well done to Mr Chris O’Hara who has run the St Peter's College Chess Club at the West Campus for many years and fostered this passion for the game amongst the students. The Interhouse Chess Competition was certainly advantageous in assisting the students to hone their skills and enable us to choose the best team available.

McGuigan Shield

McGuigan Shield House Competition

As we approach the end of the McGuigan Shield Competition, it would appear that MacKillop House has an unassailable lead. This is despite Romero House's strong run home this Term and Augustine House's meteoric rise from the bottom of the ladder.  

We will announce the winner at this week’s Campus Assembly and outline the prize to be enjoyed in the first week of next term.

Results still need to come in from the Augustine House Feed the Hippo Competition, Term 3 student participation and school attendance before we can be confident of second place which also earns a prize.

Building Parent Partnerships through Learning 

For students, the ultimate support system is not an expert teacher, but an informed and supportive family.

One of the most significant challenges facing formal education in our schools, is the chasm separating schools and communities. So, in pursuit of transparency, below are some questions to better clarify what's happening in the classroom, and then help you to decide on the kind of non-superficial actions you can perform at home to truly support the learning of your child.

In a 5 minute Parent Teacher interview you will not have time to ask all these questions.

Perhaps just pick one and begin a conversation with your child’s teacher. 

18 Questions Your Child’s Teacher Would (Probably) Love to Answer

  1. What academic standards do you use, and what do I need to know about them?
  2. How will you respond if or when my child struggles in class?
  3. What are the most important and complex (content-related) ideas my child needs to understand by the end of the year?
  4. Do you focus on strengths or weaknesses?
  5. How are creativity and innovative thinking used on a daily basis in your classroom?
  6. How is critical thinking used on a daily basis in your classroom?
  7. How are assessments designed to promote learning rather than simple measurement?
  8. What can I do to support literacy in my home?
  9. What kinds of questions do you suggest that I ask my children on a daily basis about your class?
  10. How exactly is learning personalized in your classroom?
  11. How do you measure academic progress?

Year 11 Leadership Day

Last Wednesday, four Year 11 students from the East and West Campuses travelled to Warragul to take part in a Leadership Training Day.

The day was facilitated by the Catholic Education Office.

The students were in training to become ‘Student Leaders’ at our Year 9 Reflection Day that will be held later in the year.

As part of their training, students were given the chance to take part in a liturgy, in group discussions and ice-breaker games. From this experience, they have formulated questions, and developed other strategies, to ensure that they can engage their fellow students whom they will be working with as part of the year 9 Reflection Day.

They were also asked to make a ‘Holy Door’ based on the values of ‘Mercy’.

Working in pairs, students made a ‘panel’ showing how we can carry our acts of mercy in our community. When joined together, the panels made an archway, which is designed to inspire those who walk through it, to bring mercy into their lives. This theme is to commemorate the current 'Year of Mercy' and is an activity that our Year 9 students will also undertake in October. 

Aside from the promise of a free t-shirt, the students are looking forward to being given the chance to work with younger students and to engage them in a greater awareness of social justice issues.

This is an excellent opportunity for our senior students to test out their leadership skills and put their passion for social justice into action.

Any Year 9 student who is keen to learn more about their Reflection Day, how they can act with mercy, and put their faith into action, should speak to either Mr Hampson at the East Campus or Miss Joyce at the West Campus.

Our Year 9 Reflection Day will be held on Friday, 14th October 2016.

Library Chat   Book Week Celebrations East and West Campus

Australia! Story Country

It was lovely to have students share with their class stories that their parents and grandparents have told them.

This was our way of celebrating the Book Week theme, 'Australia! Story Country'.

We learned that our families come from a wide range of countries and cultural backgrounds and that we all have stories to tell.

Morris Gleitzman, Winning Author Visit

Morris Gleitzman, a much loved author, visited during Book Week. He spoke to the very excited Year 7 Students at our East Campus and the Year 8 Students at our West Campus.

Here are some student responses:

Morris told us that he has images in his head and he writes them in his books. He asks the characters in his head lots of personal questions but the characters don’t get embarrassed about it!  Chelsea, Year 7 Student

Morris talked about his new book, Loyal Creatures and a bit about Once. I was excited to see him and he hooked me into reading Loyal Creatures. Nicholas, Year 7 Student

He spoke to us about his famous book Once and the research that he did for it. We were lucky to listen to him give us his perspective about the characters that he created. He motivated us to take a chance. Georgia, Year 8 Student

Budding Poets and Rappers Slam at West Campus

Maxwell Collins, Dylan Michael, Varun Dinesh, Adam Lynch and Spiros Halipilias entertained and impressed their audience when they took up the challenge and performed their poignant and powerful poetry at our 'Book Week Poetry Slam', last Wednesday. It was such a success that students have requested a further Slam.

Year 9 Shakespeare Enthusiasts Shine at East Campus

A rapt audience looked on as Year 9 Students performed with gusto extracts from Romeo and Juliet which they had studied during English class.

Humanities Excursion

On the 5th of August, the Year 11 Geography classes from the West and East Campuses undertook a fieldtrip to Ballarat’s Sovereign Hill.

Here our students were able to explore the evolution of Sovereign Hill's open-air tourist site’s infrastructure and marketing strategies in appealing to the growing Chinese market.

Immersing themselves in the Main Street’s 1850s layout and insightful input from periodically dressed staff members, students were able to hone their skills in accumulating rich data in investigating the characteristics of tourism, how it has developed, it’s various forms and impact on a social-cultural, environmental and economic basis.

SPC Art & Technology Exhibitions

2017 Art & Technology Exhibition Evenings

This year we will presenting our Principal’s Art Prize and our Technology Award winners for both the West and East Campus at this important event on the College Calendar. This will be the first year that a Principal’s Art Prize and Technology Award will be judged and presented for the East Campus as well as for our West Campus.

‘Save The Date’ West Campus

On Tuesday 11th October the Arts & Technology Evening for the West Campus will take place and all parents and students are invited to attend to view the outstanding art and technology pieces created by our students during the course of the year. Awards will be presented for the outstanding achievement for each House at 7.30pm with the evening beginning at 7.00pm in the Multi-Purpose Hall. 

East Campus

Monday 24th October, our East Campus will showcase to all parents and students our East students Art and Technology work created throughout 2016. Awards will be presented across all subject areas of our Art & Technology curriculum. The evening begins at 7.00pm with awards being presented from 7.30pm.

Summer Uniform Reminder

A reminder that students will be required to wear Summer Uniform on their return in Term 4.

Please check that all items of uniform items meet College standards prior end of Term 3 to allow time, (if required), for purchases and/or repairs and alterations.

Past experience tells us that particular attention should be given to the Girls Summer Uniform Dress length, which is required to be on the knee or below.

Year 7 2018 Enrolment Information Evenings

Do you know anyone with students ready for Year 7, 2018?

A reminder that our Information Evenings will be held on Wednesday 12th October at our West Campus and Tuesday 25th October at our East Campus for all those seeking enrolment for a Catholic Secondary Education at St Peter's College in 2018. The evenings will provide an opportunity for families to discuss with Senior staff the educational and pastoral needs of their children, as well as listen to the experiences of some of our current students.

The focus of the Information Evenings will be on our 2018 intake however some opportunities may still exist for enrolments at both the East and West Campus for 2017 and all enquires in this regard should be directed to our school Registrar, Mrs Kerrie Birrell.

Owrin, who will take up the position of Year 9 Program Facilitator from 2017, will present to us the College’s Vision for our specific Year 9 Curriculum Program to be introduced in 2018, along with the plans for the ‘Purpose Built’ Year 9 Complex at the East Campus due for completion for the 2018 school year.
