From the Acting Principal

Child Safety Standards

The safety of all at St. Peter’s College is of paramount importance. Protocols and procedures are designed around this very premise. The four “Rights and Responsibilities” which all students subscribe to articulate the expectations of all to behaviour standards, attitudes and safety. At times students stray from these rights and responsibilities and at St Peter’s College we have the structures in place to deal with those isolated cases. 

The impacts of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Abuse have been far-reaching, as they should be. One such impact has been the introduction of the Child Safety Standards in 2016. Last year the College Board approved the St Peter’s College Child Protection and Safety Policy.

A Staff Code of Conduct was also established in 2016, one that had widespread consultation with all the major stakeholders including: staff, students, parents and the college board. A number of external authorities such as the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority require certain standards to be met in relation to child safety. As such a number of Child Safety Standards are required to be upheld by the college, these include:

  • Standard 1: Strategies to embed an organisational culture of child safety, including through effective leadership arrangements
  • Standard 2: A child safe policy or statement of commitment to child safety
  • Standard 3: A code of conduct that establishes clear expectations for appropriate behaviour with children
  • Standard 4: Screening, supervision, training and other human resources practices that reduce the risk of child abuse by new and existing personnel
  • Standard 5: Processes for responding to and reporting suspected child abuse
  • Standard 6: Strategies to identify and reduce or remove risks of child abuse
  • Standard 7: Strategies to promote the participation and empowerment of children.

Over the course of 2016 and again in 2017 the College Leadership Team have been working diligently to ensure all standards have been met. Two areas that requires further development and policy direction include the process and protocols around Working With Children’s Check (WWCC) and also the role and responsibilities around volunteers. It is important that child safety is at the forefront of our policy and practice.

Of equal importance is the value that we hold our volunteers that give of their time to support the college in so many varied and different ways. New legislation requires WWCC regulations to be fully implemented by August of 2017. To that end further information will begin to flow over the coming months as to how these new requirements will be implemented at St Peter's College. Year 7 Camp

This week the Year 7s have been on camp. East attended camp for the first three days (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday) and West the second three days (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday). The Year 7 camp is a critical and integral aspect of the transition process.

Experience suggests that the Year 7 camp is the single most important factor of the transition program. From this experience, forum leaders are selected, connections between staff and students and between students are forged, and life-long friendships are cemented.

Students are provided with opportunities to show significant and important life skills such as leadership, teamwork, effectively communicating with each other, problem-solving, adaptability and resilience. We hope that their experiences on this camp set them  up with a skill-set and the confidence to be a significant contributor to the St Peter’s College community for the next 6 years.

House Golf Competition

Monday of this week saw the inaugural House Golf Competition being held between East and West Campus. An Ambrose type competition saw two members from East and two members from West from each house pitted against each other. Points were up for grabs for the respective house competition shields. Pride was also at stake as the campuses battled it out for the glory of taking possession of the inaugural golf trophy (yet to be commissioned). The results are as follows:

Speaking of Golf, the East Campus might just have a future Golf Champion in Kay Bannan. Kay has recently been selected for the Junior State Team as a Development Player and she will play in the Australian Junior Championships. Kay will also support the players at the Junior Interstate Series.

Last weekend Daniel participated in the Junior State Athletics Championships where he placed second in the hammer throw and third in the discus. Daniel only recently has taken on Athletics in any serious way so this makes these results even more outstanding. These recent results have catapulted into Australian selection contention. He is now training hard in the hope of performing well in the national titles in Sydney. Congratulations Daniel and keep up the good work.

Year 7 Camp

Our Year 7 students leave for camp at Forrest Edge this Wednesday, 8th March and return on Friday 10th March.  This is an important transition activity and as such a compulsory part of the school program.  Here are just some of the benefits of a well-run school camp for you child: 

  • Improved social skills with their peers
  • Insights into the diversity of other people and a different approach to how things can be done
  • New positive experiences to help develop a sense of adventure and self-confidence
  • Innovative educational experiences appealing to different learning styles
  • Development of greater independence

Finally, a camp will help your child appreciate parents, family and home.  No matter how good the experience on camp, students will always enjoy coming back home with a new and greater appreciation of their family!

Thanks to Miss Fiona McKenna and Ms Janelle McRae who have done a lot of work in preparing this particular camp.  An important reminder that if your child requires prescription medication or you would like staff to manage the distribution of non-prescription medication for your child (including Panadol), then it is crucial that you return the Student Medication Management Plan. This form MUST be signed by both a parent and a doctor or else College staff cannot administer medication.  

Harmony Day

Harmony Day is being celebrated at the West Campus on Thursday, 16th March.  I ask students to start thinking about what they would like to wear on this day to mark this significant date in our college calendar.  A number of houses, Student Representative Council and our VCAL students have begun preparations for different cultural food stalls and other events on the day.  It should be a wonderful celebration of our multicultural school.

Clothing guidelines for Harmony Day - 2017

Students are encouraged to wear clothing unique to their own culture or another culture to which they have a connection. This includes clothing commonly worn in that culture such as a kimono for students that have been on Japanese exchange or a salvar if the student has Turkish family background. National sports teams like the Socceroos or clothing that represents a country such as a top with their country name or their flag on it are allowed.

If students do not have any cultural clothing they may wear an orange shirt or top as orange is the official colour of Harmony Day and is a symbol which promotes cultural diversity.  Orange ribbons can also be purchased for a gold coin.

All money raised goes to Project Compassion.

Car Parking Within And Outside The College Grounds

When driving within the College grounds we ask everyone to drive at walking pace to avoid any injury to students.  Furthermore, I request that you show courtesy to other road users and consideration when parking your vehicle, particularly around pick up time.  If vehicles on the school property cause a significant risk for staff, students or parents, then we will need to consider all options in our West Master Plan.

Many parents choose to park outside the College grounds when picking up students at the end of the school day.  Additionally, as more Year 12 students gain their licence they choose to drive to school and are reminded that they MUST park outside the College.

May I suggest that to minimise the impact or inconvenience on our neighbours, people follow the following guidelines:

  • Park on one side of the street only.  Previously, I have suggested the side closest to the college.  This avoids blocking the street to larger vehicles
  • Do not park across driveways

Occasionally our neighbours request that we advise the school community of these guidelines in preference to them ringing the council and requesting that the by-laws officer issue infringement notices.

I would also advise parents not to stop in the turning lane on Cranbourne-Frankston Road to drop off or pick up students. This is particularly dangerous as well as inconvenient for drivers trying to turn into the College.

East Campus News

Over the past few weeks, I have been received a number of additional requests from parents wishing to enrol their child at St. Peter's College. One of the first questions I ask both the parents and their child is; why St. Peter's College?

Their answers always highlight the good reputation of the College and its ability to provide all students with an excellent education. These two highly desired outcomes reflect the third and fourth of our shared Rights & Responsibilities as outlined in page 19 of the student record book. 

RIGHT = To Learn
RESPONSIBILITY = To contribute to effective learning of others through positive an co-operative behaviour.

Therefore: Disruptive behaviour, not completing homework, failing to meet deadlines, unauthorised absence from class and not being prepared are not acceptable. 

RIGHT  =  To benefit from the reputation of the College.
RESPONSIBILITY =  To promote and uphold the good name of the College.

Therefore: Uniform is worn correctly and with pride. Rudeness, vandalism and bullying are never acceptable.

Supporting the reputation of our College is the duty of us all and we ask our students to commit to this daily. As parents you can and do assist us to maintain and strengthen the College’s reputation and capacity to enrich the lives of our students.

For new parents a very practical way that you can support the College is by joining the Parents & Friends Association as invited to by Mrs Mairi-anne Macartney at the Welcome Evening. This provides a perfect opportunity to Stand Up as Peter did and support the College to provide your children with the best possible educational and personal outcomes and secure a reputation that will ensure a positive and productive future.

It is also a great way to build friendships and partnerships with other parents. The next Parents & Friends meeting is: Tuesday 21st March.

A few reminders: 

1. Visitors

All visitors are required to report to the front office upon arrival at the College. This procedure is directly linked to the protection and care of all students and members of the College community. Students who have left the College are not permitted to come onto the College grounds for the purpose of just visiting their friends. Our Past students are always welcome to visit with their teachers and are also requested to report to the front office upon arrival.

2. Medical conditions/sickness – and staying home.

It is important that children who are ill be kept at home, to assist with their recovery and maintaining the health of other students and teachers. Should your child suffer from an illness such as chicken-pox which has the potential to be contagious, please inform the office, keep your child at home until medical advice that he/she can return to school. We are happy to provide work for your child to do at home, if this is appropriate. 

3. No Parking Zone

Please be aware that there is no parking in the front of the St. Peter's College sign. It is not a drop off or pick up zone.  Thank you.

Learning & Teaching

On Going Professional Learning for Staff

In 2016 College staff developed our Vision for Learning which places emphasis on ACTIVE Learning. To bring this Vision to fruition staff are now working to develop classroom learning activities that require students to be active participants in their learning.

This skill is important for all our students if they are to be prepared for life after St Peter’s College.

The rapidly emerging technologies and fast paced change that we are experiencing in the 21st Century will mean that students require skills in Creativity, Critical Thinking and Communication.

CLASSROOM

Students must learn How to Learn.

To support staff in developing these learning plans, the College has in 2017 restructured our after school meetings into Professional Learning Teams (PLT’s).

Each week all staff meet in small teams to plan, implement and evaluate new learning experiences for students.

Of particular emphasis, this year is extending students in the top 50% of the class and developing more differentiated learning.

Some staff will also attend the Hawker Brownlow Conference in May to gain further skills in leading Professional Learning Teams.

This commitment in time and resources is a testament that staff are enthusiastic about lifelong learning and seek to model this for both students and parents.

VCE Assessors at St. Peter’s College

Each year a number of staff apply to be VCE assessors for their chosen subject. The benefits of this for our VCE students are invaluable.

For staff to have a clear understanding of examiners requirements through marking of VCE papers is incredible Professional Learning for our staff.

This in turn is feed back to students and provides the best possible opportunities for students at St. Peter's College.

St Agatha's Parish News

Dear Parishioners

This weekend we pray for those in the parish RCIA groups who will travel to St Mary’s Cathedral, Sale, for the Rite of Election. This is the beginning of a special time of preparation for the Easter Sacraments; please keep them in your prayers. 

A group has been formed to work towards the establishment of a Parish Pastoral Council. These are the members of the group: Peter Schreurs, Sue Ryan, Joseph Raudino, Regina Abraham, Mario Rodrigues, Angela D’Mello, Hubert Guerra, Chrisanne Besterwitch and Manoj Vechoorettu. In the coming weeks, this group will speak during our weekend Masses on the importance of the Parish Pastoral Council and the role they play. They will also invite us to participate in the nomination of new council members. 
I have great confidence in this group and believe they will do a very good job. I encourage all of you to please pray for them, and I would be very grateful to anyone who can provide them useful information that could help them in this very important task. 

Last Friday we hosted the World Day of Prayer service in our Church. It was wonderful to join in prayer with the people from other Christian Churches in Cranbourne. I thank Beth Fivaz for her organisation of the day and for those who assisted with cultural food for the morning tea. 

We welcome Fr Berny Agustines who is visiting the parish, He will be celebrating the 6.00pm Mass today.

Invigorate Youth Group

As we commence our Lenten journey, we ask all youth members to join us for Good Friday practice on Friday 10th March.

Please meet us in the parish hall at 6.50pm. We will attend the Stations of the Cross in church at 7.30pm together and will then continue our meeting until 8:30pm. 

Agape Youth

Our Next bible study session with Father Joseph is on Sunday 5th March. Pls meet us in the chapel at 7pm for prayer followed by bible study till 8:30pm in the parish hall. 

Good Friday 3pm Service

St Vinnies

We are in need of volunteers to help us in the Piety stall after the 7.30am and 10.45am Mass. We also need some volunteers to help with home visitations, a variety of times are available and we train you and always travel in threes, you another volunteer and Our Lord.

Remember Our Blessed Mother said that your hands need to be full of good deeds to get to heaven, help the poor and your hands will be overflowing. Everyone is welcome just ring 5996 1758 and have a chat to us. God bless.

Prayer should be the foundation of everything that we do; therefore, we would like to invite anyone who is committed to praying at least once a week for the needs of the parish and beyond to contact John Duiker at john@stagathas.org.au or by phoning the parish office on 5996 1985.

There is no set prayer format, so it might be a rosary, time in adoration, formal prayers, etc. at a time and place that suits you. If you sign up for this ministry, you will receive regular emails on specific prayer points.

College Captains meeting with Bishop Patrick O'Regan

Last Friday, St. Peter’s College Captains from both campuses attended a workshop held by the Catholic Diocese of Sale at Sale Catholic College where we had the opportunity to meet our Bishop, Bishop Patrick O'Regan. We were welcomed by Jeremy Smith the Education Officer (Catholic Identity and Religion) for CEO Sale. The first session was an ice breaker activity which was led by the Youth Minister, Lillian Livitts. They were short and fun games where we had to get up, make a group with two  other students from other Colleges and say two truths and a lie about ourselves. This followed by a fruit game where we sat in a circle and had to name a fruit that we thought related to us.

The games were a quick opportunity to meet students from other colleges and it was fun. After the ice breakers, Lilian Livitts gave a presentation on her personal faith journey.

Next, students from all Colleges had the opportunity to do their own five minutes presentation revolving around two central questions that we were given to think about:

  • What are the concerns that young people face today and
  • how we deal with it 

The common responses were that students had problems with stress, body image, bullying, ATAR Scores, work opportunities, global issues and technology. Following on from these concerns, Bishop Pat gave his opinion on the issues that the students had represented to him.

He mentioned that we have two eyes and one mouth, and that we should listen twice as much as we speak. Students should not be afraid, and instead they should turn to faith, and remember that we are not alone in what we are facing and God is with us every step of the way. Bishop Pat also spoke about how we should be ourselves but we should be our “best self”. He encouraged us to be authentic in dealing with life.

The Bishop then invited all the teachers to have a little walk around the school, while the Student Leaders sat with him and asked him any question they liked.

Finally, he celebrated a short liturgy with us and then he blessed badges and gave them to us as a token and souvenir from the workshop. We finished with a lunch and once again gave us an opportunity to meet with other leaders from other Colleges. Then, it was time to head back to school Mr Hampson our Uber Driver for the day.

Overall, the day was inspirational and made us reflect the issues of modern society. Bishop Pat was incredibly kind and down to earth. It was certainly a great opportunity to not just reflect, but to meet other young students who are also going through what we face.

Introducing our College Student Leaders 2017

This year I set out on a personal mission to remove myself from my comfort zone and challenge myself in all areas of my life. My favourite quote reads ‘be the change that you want to see in the world,’ and through this role I hope that I can take actions to make the world a better place and inspire others to do the same. 

In the world today, we constantly see many injustices. One person alone cannot solely find a solution for all the issues we face, but that is not to say that one person cannot make an impact at all. My goal is to ensure that students who are passionate about justice and making a difference are provided with the accessibility to get involved with the social justice events and opportunities that St. Peter's College provides and encourage increased participation within the College. 

Our annual college theme "After much debate...Peter stood up" ties in perfectly with my vision for social justice at the College this year; in the way that I want to be able to encourage all of our students to essentially, stand up. Whether it be for their own rights, for the rights of others, for justice or for fairness and generosity in our community. I myself will ensure I am a role model of this, and portray to students the idea of servant leadership; encompassing having the desire to serve first and live out the actions in which I preach.

I applied for the role of Social Justice Captain because I really feel strongly about issues such as homelessness and I wanted to be able to do something to make a difference.

I see my role as being important at St. Peter’s College because I can help raise awareness about social justice issues amongst the students.
My personal goal for this year is to make more students aware of issues and to give them the chance to help out in some way.

I think this fits with our College theme this year because Saint Peter saw an issue and he stood up and spoke out about it.

I think sometimes social justice issues seem really big and difficult so I hope that if I can speak out like Saint Peter more students will also feel like they can speak out and do something to help.

Casey Creations Youth Arts Competition 2017 - entries now open!

Entries are open to students in Years 5 and 6 (Junior), Years 7-9 (Intermediate) and Years 10-12 (Senior) or age equivalent in the categories of Visual Arts (2D) and Photography. All entries must be received no later than 5.00 pm on Friday 21 April 2017, and no more than two (2) works per student can be accepted.

Winners will be selected by a community judging panel, with fantastic prizes available. The presentation of prizes and certificates will take place during May of 2017.

Lessons run weekly for 30 mins at a cost of $35 per lesson. 

My teaching methods include a wide range of information and practical application to ensure all students are given the opportunity to take their musical studies to the highest level.

Musical programs are tailored to each student's individual capabilities. A crucial aspect of musical development is regular practise and it is very important that your child is encouraged at home to maintain a regular practise schedule.

An average of 30 mins to 1 hour each day is recommended to ensure proper development.

Project Compassion Launch

On March 2, four students in the Year 10 CYSMA class (East Campus) attended the launching of the Project Compassion Launch at Sale. We talked about simple actions that we can do to help provide for those less fortunate than us.

The presenters talked about the main features of Project Compassion this year. They then elaborated in detail so that we would have a great understanding of what Project Compassion was really all about. The presenters gave us advice on how we can promote the campaign in our school.

Bishop Patrick O'Regan was present and led the liturgy mass on the day. After the presentation, we had lunch with the other students from Catholic Schools that attended the event.

We had pancakes as lunch as it was also Shrove Tuesday. It was fun interacting with the other students from other schools which expanded our understanding on other student’s perspective on helping the people less fortunate than us.

Catch the Wave

On Thursday the 2nd of March, the Year 10 CSYMA classes from East and West Campus combined for a workshop called 'Catch the Wave.' The workshop was an introduction to the CSYMA class as well as teaching us about our own faith.

There were many activities including a small acting task where we had to put a bible story into something we can relate to today. I really enjoyed the workshop. I learned many things that I can put towards my own faith and I also really enjoyed combining with the West Campus, sharing ideas and making new friends.

SIS Senior Boys Soccer (mid-term report):

St. Peter's College 3 - 3 Nazareth (Cooke, Pompeii, OG)
SFX 5 - 1 St. Peter's College (Vechoorettu)
John Paul 2 - 1 St. Peter's College (Purcell)

Chairman DeGoldi, having wielded the axe in recent years with the brutal sackings of Brown and Laurie, brought in Broadley to coach.... who was coming off 5 years undefeated with the Senior Girls team.

The first game saw a coaching masterclass as the team fought back from two goals down in the last ten minutes to snatch a fortuitous draw against a strong Nazareth outfit.

We then entered struggle town over at SFX, not helped by Sports Captain Kelly's dire penalty miss, and we were well beaten.

Broadley galvanised the troops for the away trip to John Paul in what turned out to be an even contest. Captain for the day Galojlic, in the "Zlatan" role up front, couldn't quite stretch to convert a couple of chances and we went down by a single goal.

Two more away trips await - a winnable one at Berwick and then a tough final assignment against the strongest team in the competition, St Johns.

Drawing inspiration from the rejuvination of the sleeping giant Leeds United, we will be "Marching on Together" win, lose or draw.

SRC News

Hello, my name is Rutendo Pasura and I am the offical SRC Media Liaison for West Campus. 

Rutendo

I am 15 years old and currently in Year 9. I was given the opportunity to be a Forum Leader for Assisi House for the second year in a row, as well as the opportunity to be in the SRC. So far I have enjoyed my time in the SRC and I look forward to the many great things we have in store for 2017.

On February 21st we had our first meeting. In this meeting we introduced ourselves to each other and starting suggesting ideas to make changes towards our College. The duty of each and every SRC member is to be the “voice of the students”. Not everyone will be able to speak up and be heard so connecting with one of the SRC members is a way for you as a student of St. Peter’s College to be heard. A motto I like to think to myself is, “that no idea is a bad idea”, which is why every issue or idea a student raises with a SRC Member will never be neglected.

A few different things that made this meeting one not to forget was how well everyone got along and how open it was. People were not afraid to make suggestions and just from looking at everyone you could see how culturally diverse the group was.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL, Learning and Teaching (Cross Campus) Degree Home Economics, B.Ed.;Grad Dip Computers in Education, Grad.Certificate RE; Cert IV Assessment and Training, Cert III Hospitality, M.Ed.Leadership  

Marlene Jorgensen joined the College in 2013, taking up the position of Deputy Principal Learning and Teaching in 2014. Marlene is passionate about the power of Education to transform lives and has applied her considerable energy and expertise to ensuring high-quality learning for all of our students. Marlene has been involved in Catholic education for 32 years, across Darwin, Sydney, Rural Victoria and Canberra.

Marlene’s leadership experience includes leading in pastoral positions as House Leader and Year Level Coordinator, Senior Curriculum Coordinator and Events Coordination. For the past three years, Marlene has worked to promote a culture of continual improvement at St Peter’s College. Her achievements to date include implementation of the Staff Mid Appointment review process, Introduction of HeadStart, promotion of the GROWTH Coaching Model and embedding Understanding by Design as the Model for Curriculum development. Marlene will focus her presentation on the implementation of Continuous Online Reporting through SCHOOLBOX, the College Online Learning platform.
