From the Acting Principal

AGM

At the Annual General Meeting of the College Board on the 26th of April, the term of two of our Parent Representatives will expire.

Dr Stephen van der Velden and Mr David Williams terms as West Campus Parent Representatives on the College Board expire at the AGM. Both are fully eligible to re-nominate as Parent Representatives for a further 3 year term. Consistent with the Constitution of the Board, other parents who are members of the Parish Community may also wish to nominate.

In accordance with the constitution Ms Sharron Clover and Mr Ken Barnes, our current Chairperson of the Board, are both understood to be entering the second year of their three-year term as Parent Representatives.

Nominations for the two vacant Parent Representatives on the College Board will open on Friday March 24th and close on March 30th. Nomination forms are available from the College office and from both St Agatha’s Parish Office and St Thomas the Apostle Parish Office until the 30th of March.

Nomination forms can be submitted to the Administration Centre of the East or West Campus and also to the Parish Office at St Agatha’s or St Thomas the Apostle which are open from 8.30 am to 3pm Monday to Friday. In accordance with the constitution of the College Board , the newly elected parent representative must be a member of St Agatha’s or St Thomas the Apostle Parish community and have a son or daughter enrolled at the College. 

Polling if necessary will take place at Parish Masses on the weekend of the 8th & 9th of April.

Social Justice

St Peter’s College is committed to supporting the needs of the needy within our community. Living out our faith and living out the gospel values of hope, justice and love is what we stand for at St Peter’s College. I have written in this forum before that our Social Justice program is central to who we are. A number of current projects fall under this heading including support of an aged care facility, assistance at “Vinnies” and support of the Ozanam House program.

It was wonderful to receive some positive feedback from the staff of Ozanam House last week of the support they have received over a long period of time. Ozanam House is closing temporarily for renovations but we look forward to renewing our association with them in eighteen months time.

Project Compassion

I congratulate the work of both staff and students who continue to work with energy and enthusiasm in raising funds to support the annual Project Compassion appeal. The activities and food stalls associated with Harmony Day have assisted their efforts, however there are still two weeks to go. Please support them in their fund-raising efforts. One way you can is by purchasing raffle tickets on sale during the Parent Teacher Interview days. 

No Way – National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence

Last Friday St Peter’s College recommitted to our stand against Bullying and Violence. The day commenced with a prayer and powerpoint highlighting the importance of standing up and saying “No Way”. Our school theme, “After much debate Peter stood up…”provides a wonderful context for this stance. In this instance however no debate is required. Violence and Bullying is not and will not be tolerated at St Peter’s.

Each student on Friday also received a wrist band to remind them of our stance. Our pastoral program, inclusive of our vertical house system and our counselling services provides a positive framework to tackle any such issues. It is important that dialogue between home and school if any issue ever arises happens early so that a simple problem can be addressed rather than letting it fester on until it becomes more complex. Students should always be encouraged to speak to a teacher if they feel they are being bullied. Parents are encouraged to make contact with their child’s Learning Advisor or House Leader with any concern.

Human Powered Vehicle

Congratulations to the HPV team, staff, students and parents who competed last weekend at the 24 hour endurance event at Wonthaggi. From all reports the students worked tirelessly and with great energy and enthusiasm in hot conditions. Team Viper is to be congratulated in particular for their fantastic efforts in placing third. Our best ever effort. Congratulations to all involved.

2017 Student Residential Data Collection

All parents will receive an electronic letter in the coming days from the Australian Government. All schools are requested to provide residential address details to the Department of Education and Training. The purpose of this is to determine the Socio-economic status levels as part of the Australian Government’s funding arrangements. The information explaining this process and the purpose is explained in more detail in this letter.

Harmony Day

As part of the Harmony Day celebrations, students in each House were asked to contribute to making a chain that would signify our commitment to strengthening the bonds of Harmony. Over a week, during tutor groups, students made links, using orange card. Words, and messages of Harmony were written on each of the links which varied in size, width and design. All of these differences signified and celebrated the rich cultural diversity of our College community.

Once each House had joined the links from each Tutor Group – it was taken to the Harmony Day Assembly. At the conclusion of a wonderful assembly, the House Captains were asked to join all chains made by each house, into one long united chain of Harmony. As each house chain joined another house, the students of those houses stood in unity and honour of the creation of the chain of Harmony. It was a most moving experience to see our entire student body stand up for the Chain of Harmony.

The Colour Orange is the universal colour of Harmony. The paper we have used represents the fragility of Harmony when we mistreat or care less for one another. The links in the chain are different, in size, and design, representing the diversity that makes us who we are; and the words inscribed on links convey messages of Hope, love, care, friendship, trust, belonging, unity, strength, peace and even forgiveness. The Final united Chain represents the hope of strength as each link represents each one of us as we meet St Peter’s College Challenge To Stand Up – Let us Stand Up For Harmony.

Over the coming months, a team of students and staff will be working to design a permanent ‘chain of Harmony’ made from the paper chain created by the students for Harmony day. So stay tuned for the unveiling of what hopes to be a truly remarkable thought provoking permanent visual display of Harmony.

Student Leadership Opportunities

Two of our Year 9 Forum Leaders, Paayal Naidu and Will Pham represented the East Campus at the City of Casey Youth Panel which was held on Friday 17th March 2017. 

The youth panel was facilitated by Capire Consulting to provide a fun and engaging way for young people to share their thoughts and opinions with Councillors and community leaders, including the City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz.  Please enjoy the reflection as written by Will Pham.

Walking into the Casey youth hub with an open mind we were lead into a room where we would spend the day with other schools in the Casey region. Our first activity was to find out what the three levels of government do. From this activity I learnt that both state and local government do most of the work e.g. roads, parks, and schools. The second activity was closer to home which was discussing how we would manage our local budget for the next 10 years. The day finished with what should be the priorities of the council. We were given three stickers to vote for what we think is a need.

The top three greatest needs voted by us the youth of Casey were:

  1. the need to feel safe even at night.
  2. everyone gets an equal voice
  3. farmland should be respected not sold out into housing

Overall I enjoyed the day and believe I have gained an insight into how we can have a voice in our local government.

West Campus News

Harmony Day

The West Campus celebrated a wonderful Harmony Day last Thursday beginning with an assembly celebrating our rich diversity and emphasizing that we all belong.  We were particularly blessed by our Islander and African girls through their cultural dancing. A professional Indian dancer entertained and taught us about Bollywood dancing.

At recess we enjoyed the parade of a number of students in national dress which is always so colourful. The VCAL students proposed some changes to the dress code and it was pleasing to see a number of students wear orange as a sign of solidarity with many students from diverse national backgrounds.

Lunchtime is always a great celebration and this year’s carnival atmosphere in the Central Courtyard was no exception.  

House Leaders and their student forums, VCAL students and SRC leaders all combined to provide a rich array of foods and activities.  Students were able to participate in a soccer competition, have henna tattoos, face painting and coloured hairspray.  Thanks to all the staff and students who worked together to make it such a positive celebration.

National Day Of Action Against Violence & Bullying

St Peter’s College registered for this national day of action and used the morning Tutor Group time to pray and raise awareness amongst our students of this important issue.

Students were challenged to be considerate of others, to raise awareness of bullying and ensure that they are not bystanders.  As a Catholic community we are called to move beyond to act against bullying and violence when we see it happen.

Casey Leaders Student Leaders Reception

Last Thursday, 16 March, College Captains Emily Lace and Henry Cooke and Environment Captain Raphael Kostopoulos and Social Justice Captain Sunishma Balla attended the City of Casey Student Leaders Reception at Cranbourne Racing Club. A number of young speakers presented speeches inspiring our young leaders to strive to make their mark on the world.  

The key note address was delivered by the founder of Pinchapoo, Ms Kate Austin. This charity donates the toiletries from hotels & motels to people in need.  In 7 years, they have redistributed almost 1 million toiletries through around 50 different organisations.  

Kate’s story is an inspirational account of resilience and determination that made a simple but brilliant idea into a reality against the odds.  My hope is that all our students can be inspired to dream big, make their mark on the world and do so in a most compassionate way.

I was pleased to note that MacKillop House under the leadership of Ms Janelle McRae chose this charity to work with last year in a very effective way.

Winter Uniform

A reminder that winter uniform is to be worn from the commencement of Term 2. In particular girls are reminded of the need to wear the correct traditional tie or bow tie with the appropriate blouse.  

All students are also reminded of wearing the correct sports uniform only when permitted. Parents and students are reminded about our zero tolerance policy to students not wearing school uniform correctly.

I look forward to meeting many of you next week at Parent Teacher Interviews. I hope this is a positive opportunity to follow the progress of your child and understand further the ways in which you can help your child to achieve success in the subjects being studied.

Last week all families were emailed details of student progress via our Interim Reports. These mid-semester reports are available from the Parent Portal.

A reminder of User ID and instructions has also been emailed home to assist parents who may have forgotten their User name and password.

As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, Parent Teacher Interviews are an important opportunity for parents to communicate with teachers about student progress to date.

All parents are encouraged to book appointments even if progress to date is satisfactory. Students should also attend interviews to be part of this valued three-way conversation.

Religious Education News

Ozanam House Closes for Renovations

Three students (Saheeb Hossain, Suraj Nair, and Emilyn Moroney) and Mr Hampson worked in the kitchen on Wednesday 15 March before Ozanam House closed for major renovations.

It was an eye opening experience for students appreciating what they have in life and what others do not have. The Ozanam House supervisor gave an overview of the clients, their mental and physical disabilities, and what they had to cope with in daily life. Staff in the kitchen were very thankful for the contribution students at St Peter’s College have made over the last 20 years and have asked to make sure that, when Ozanam House reopens in 2019, we would volunteer again.

Staff impressed students with the preparation and quality of food that was provided for clients.It was interesting to note that most of the food was donated to Ozanam House. The homeless people seemed to be very grateful and appreciative of everyone helping them.Their smiles and thanks were noted.

It is hoped that St Peter’s College is able to find another social justice opportunity for students to participate in as we felt it was a  valuable experience.

This year I decided to step out my comfort zone and take on the challenge of Liturgy Captain for 2017. I always wanted to strive for growth in my faith and by taking on this position I was able to fulfil that aim. 

Faith has always been a strong part of my family and personal life and in bringing that aspect into my College community I feel so excited and enthusiastic to where it will lead. 

After much debate…Peter stood up. My vision for this year is to build the faith community in our College by 'standing up' just like Peter did. I will continue to strive in my faith by being involved and active in our College Liturgical ceremonies and encouraging other students to do so as well. 

I want to be a role model that students can look up to and take that chance to 'stand up' as well.

Liturgy has always been an integral part of St Peter’s College and of my life too, so I saw the opportunity to be the Liturgy Captain as one which would help me to grow in my faith and put my faith into action at school.

This year in my role as Liturgy Captain, I would like to help people become aware of God’s love for them through the liturgy and be more actively involved, so that they can participate more fully and in a way that enriches their life and their time at St Peter's College.

This year’s theme, “After Much Debate, Peter stood up...” speaks to me in a very personal way because it encourages me to stand up even when those around me do not. I am encouraged to do what I believe is right even when no one else is with me and personally this helps me in life to make the right decisions and do God’s will.

St Agatha's Parish News

Dear Parishioners 

We welcome the School leaders of St Agatha’s, St. Therese’s and St. Peter’s West College at the 10.45am Mass last weekend. Last  weekend we will be commissioning new Extra-Ordinary Ministers and Lectors from our schools, 20 from St Agatha’s and 6 from St Therese’s School. We are working together to create a stronger bond between Parish and School and assure them of our continued support and prayers.

Thank you to the Joseph family, for donating the beautiful pictures of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary in the Church.

Next weekend we begin the process to establish a new Parish Pastoral Council. Members from the establishment group will give a short talk at all Masses to explain the role of the Parish Pastoral Council and the desired qualities required of a council member.

Parishioners will be asked to recommend other parish members for possible membership of the council, or you may also nominate yourself. Nomination forms will be available next weekend and must be returned by Sunday 2nd of April. Please pray that the Holy Spirit will lead those who are called to this important ministry of service and leadership.

We, who are many, form one Body in Christ Rom 12: 5. 

100 days of Perpetual Adoration begins at 9.00am on Saturday, 1st April – 8th April, 2017. This is a time set aside by this parish every year to reflect on the word of God, listen to various spiritual talks, pray for various intentions, celebrate Mass every morning and evening and adore the Blessed Sacrament day and night in the for the period of one week. I invite every parishioner to make good use of this period and receive abundant Grace from God.

Dear young people of St Thomas

Our Pope encourages us to “be dreamers [who] believe in a new humanity, one that reject shatred between peoples, one that refuses to see borders as barriers”.

This Lent, let us challenge ourselves to love others through acts of charity and generosity with the gift of time and patience.

  • On Friday 24th March please meet us in the parish hall at 6.50pm for Stations of the Cross-re-enactment practice.
  • During Lent, BIBLE STUDY will be held EVERY SUNDAY. Please meet us in the Chapel at 7pm for 30 minutes Adoration followed by bible study until 8:30pm at the parish hall.
  •  Rehearsal For Good Friday Service will be held on Saturday 1st April and 8th April from 11am- 12.30pm at the parish hall.

Thursday Evening Mass

This year we would like to focus on praying for different needs within our families, parish and wider community. At the Thursday evening Mass at 7.30pm there will be prayers offered for the special intention of that week.

The last Thursday of the month will be offered in thanksgiving for birthdays.

This is the list of intentions for the month of March: 23rd – For the sick, especially cancer patients; 30th – For those celebrating a birthday in March.

Human Powered Vehicle – Wonthaggi Grand Prix

On Friday 17th of March thirteen riders, (Viper: Michael Miller, Tim Miller, Joshua Bartlett, Rhys Davidson, Sean Humble, Charlie Ratten and Dylan Powell; Phoenix: Emily Coco, Justine Davidson, Alexandra Mule, Alysa Kupke, Kyle Henderson-Gillespie and Levi Henderson Gillespie), three teachers, (Mr Ziggy Wolinski, Miss Karen Williams and Mrs Janine Dissegna) and many parents travelled to Wonthaggi for the 20th annual 24 hour Human Powered Grand Prix held in the town.

This year 97 teams made the pilgrimage to what is considered by many as one of the best races on the Victorian Circuit. The area quickly became a tent city with riders and crews setting up pits and camp sited and preparing for the coming race on Saturday. The St Peter’s College HPV would be competing in the Open Secondary Category (students from years 7-12) which placed them in completion with riders from up to year 12.

Dawn broke with mild but windy conditions to the sight of teams already setting up for the noon race start. This time approached quickly and soon the vehicles were at the start line with riders strapped in waiting for the pace car to begin the rolling start to the event. The clock passed noon and the race began. Elite teams quickly started to lap the primary school teams with the competition pace heating up very quickly. Viper moved into 4th in the Open Category and by dinner time was placed 3rd out of 20 teams in their category. Phoenix which had started 79th overall had moved to 70th.

At 7:30pm all vehicles had to turn on their lights and by 10pm all primary schools were required to leave the track for a compulsory rest break until 6am. At this point all the other teams raced faster. The students took two hour shifts in pairs through the night while the rest slept. At 4am, fog rolled into the area making visibility poor and forcing many teams to remove their windscreens so that they could see.

With the return of the Primary students at 6am and the now tired Secondary and Elite riders, the number of accidents increased, but despite this, Viper managed to retain 3rd, just beating the next team by 1 lap. Phoenix finished 65th out of 97 teams, an outstanding achievement for a team made up of largely new members.

To conclude, the riders in Viper rode 501 laps of the 1.4 km track which is an amazing 701.4km, and in Phoenix rode 300 laps or 420km.

Year 10 CSYMA Caritas Ks Walkathon

Harmony Day is a day to celebrate multiculturalism, not only in our school, but in our world. It is a wonderful thing that we have so many cultures to celebrate. However, across the globe, thousands of women and children need to cover many kilometres each day to fetch water, obtain food, get to school or market, or simply to survive. Did you know that the average distance women in Asia and Africa walk to collect safe drinking water is six kilometres, carrying an average of 20kg of water on their heads? 

During Period 5 on Harmony Day, you may have heard or seen the commotion in our school’s central courtyard. This was all thanks to our Year 10 CSYMA class challenging themselves in the Caritas Ks Walkathon. 

By organising a Caritas Ks Walkathon in an effort to help the poorest of the poor in the fight against global poverty, our CSYMA class’ vision was to stand in solidarity with all who must walk, run, cycle or swim many kilometres each day for basic necessities. When asking for sponsorship, we tried to raise awareness of these realities and ‘be a voice’ for those who are not heard.

In small teams, our class walked laps and carried buckets of water around a course. We put our feet into the shoes of those who carry litres of water just to provide for their family or simply walk to school. Our goal was to complete 100 laps in solidarity - which we surpassed. We covered 101 laps for compassion!

Not only did we raise awareness about global poverty with our friends and family and engage in this solidarity walk, we have also raised a collective $175 and counting to contribute to Caritas’ Project Compassion.

This money goes directly towards:

  • $75 = providing one piglet and training to a family in the Philippines to help them generate a stable source of income
  • $50 = a three-day first aid course for one person to help protect their families and neighbours during natural disasters in the Philippines
  • $35 = one counselling session to help parents support their children living with disabilities to enjoy a better life in Vietnam
  • $10 providing one day’s worth of food for a woman staying in a shelter in Timor-Leste and - this will only grow.

We would like tto say a big thank you to our peers for your enthusiasm, encouragement and compassion and to Miss McRae and Miss Joyce for your support. This was a fantastic effort!

Casey Youth Forum

On Friday 17th March, St Peter’s College students, two from the West Campus and two from the East Campus were invited to attend the City of Casey Youth Forum. In all just over 20 students from the region from both Primary and Secondary School participated in this Forum.

I had the pleasure of attending the Forum, with these four young people from our College, and was very impressed by the way they represented not only our College, but themselves and their families, and as part of the Youth of Casey. The day started with an overview of which Governments within Australia fund which activities and then the students were shown the City of Casey projected income vs expenditure over the next 10 Years.

Forum Aim

Work toward a series of messages to counsellors of the City of Casey, from the young people within our community, of what they expect when tough decisions need to be made about the management of the financial situation over the next 10 years.

All students worked intently and participated in workshops designed to ascertain what is important to the Youth of Casey. The group then discussed and then individually voted for their top 4 Key Statements to go to council. All students were then videoed giving their feedback, which will be shown to City Councillors.

“As the Casey Youth Panel it is important to us that:

  • People feel safe in Casey at all times particularly at night and on public transport
  • The natural environment is enhanced, valued, and protected particularly farmland and trees
  • There is improved accessibility in and around Casey including bike paths, public transport and roads”
  • All Casey voices are effective and heard

“I had a wonderful day, and think I we were all doing something really worthwhile, and I am very proud to have received a Certificate for my attendance from the Mayor of the City of Casey” Georgia Clover.

Active April

Throughout the month of April, St Peter’s College East and West will be taking part in the Premier’s Active April. This is a government initiative to increase the amount of physical activity we are undertaking, increase socialisation and are proving a range of free activities to members who sign up.

All you need to do is sign up to the Active April website, Click Here: for free, download the app and join the correct term:

PASTORAL CARE LEADER
B.Arts (Hons); Grad.Cert.RE: Dip.Ed (Sec); M.Ed.Leadership    

Fiona joined the St. Peter's College community as Pastoral Care Leader (West Campus) this year. Having worked as a Legal Clerk before commencing her teaching career, she has held a range of leadership positions in her time at both Emmaus College and Presentation College Windsor. Fiona is very passionate about the unique role of Pastoral Care in a Catholic setting. She will share her perspective on this aspect of Catholic education with you, as well as discuss the importance of the Parent and Friends working in partnership with the school, as we all work to support students through their secondary education.
