Dear Parents and Students,

Refugee Week

This week we celebrate Refugee Week, which at St. Peter’s College takes on additional significance. Many of our families are either first generation refugees, with many more being second generation refugees. Our College is blessed to have many cultures making up one community and we are all the richer for sharing and learning of each others customs and ways of life. World Refugee Week brings an opportunity for us, once again, to show our love and support for refugees and make those who are living amongst us feel welcome into our school. A range of activities have been organised in the coming days to; reflect on the issues surrounding refugees, the importance of welcome and a recognition of the importance of celebrating the diversity that comes as a result. Below is a prayer that will be used in tutor groups throughout the week.

A Prayer for Refugees

Lord God, No one is a stranger to you and no one is ever far from your loving care.

In your kindness, watch over refugees and victims of war, those separated from loved ones, young people who are lost and those who have left home or who have run away from danger.

Bring them safely to the place they want to be and help us to show kindness
to strangers and to all in need.

Grant this through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Active Learning

Monday we were not only witnesses to but participants in Active Learning Day. St. Peter’s College vision for learning is based around the theme of active learning, where student-led learning leads to more meaningful and stimulating opportunities to engage. For Years 7 and 8, students participated in a range of activities including Chess, Indigenous painting, Shark Tank, Maths Games, Science Challenge and Shakespeare Theatre, to name just a few. For Year 9 students it was Try a VET Day with a large variety of “hands-on” activities including, Building and Construction, Electro-Technology, Sports Fitness testing, Hospitality, Beauty and Make-up, Fashion, the list goes on. For Years 10-12 there was the opportunity to receive their exams back and more importantly have the opportunity to gain valuable feedback. The feedback thus far was that Active Learning Day was a wonderfully engaging day of learning, one which we hope mirrors student learning every day.

St. Peter’s Day

June 29th is the feast day of St. Peter (and St. Paul). To mark the occasion of our patron saint two significant events are occurring in the next week. The first is our annual St. Peter’s College staff dinner and the second is St. Peter’s Day, to be held next Tuesday. The staff dinner provides us with the opportunity to acknowledge staff members who have served this community for a considerable amount of time. In this case we will be celebrating staff who have contributed either 10 years or 20 years of service. Congratulations to:

10 Year Service Recipients                      20 Year Service Recipients
Andrew Broadley                                        David Bardi
Danick Couty                                              Barry Fisher
Justin De Goldi
Wendy de Vries
Antonia Hemming
Luisa Jakubicki
Timothy Keegan
Karyn Munday
Trudy Perkins
David Stretch
Mark Sinclair

In reading the staff reflections two broad and consistent themes emerged. When these staff were asked what they enjoyed most they cited the collegiality of staff and the genuine, kind, sincere and unpretentious nature of students.
I look forward to celebrating St. Peter’s day with students next Tuesday, particularly when we gather as one school for our mass at Casey Basketball stadium, the beginning of a new tradition. Parents are most welcome to attend the mass.
