Pastoral Care

Based firmly on Gospel values, we dedicate ourselves to the comprehensive pastoral care of students and staff.

Pastoral Care at St. Peter’s embraces more than the giving of well prepared, thought provoking and stimulating lessons.

It means being concerned for the total wellbeing of students, and with the development of the whole person within the context of the family, school, parish and wider community.

We do this not only through the development of a curriculum that educates the whole person, but also through the following structures and programs that build relationships between staff and students.

Learning Advisor

At the forefront of Pastoral Care Program is the Tutor Group Learning Advisor  who has daily contact with the students from Year 7 to 12 in their care and is the first point of contact for matters concerning students in each Homeroom. The Learning Advisor works closely with the House Leader on all matters related to the academic and behavioural progress of their students.

Pastoral Care Programs

The Learning Advisors, each year, undertake with their students a series of programs aimed at assisting with their psychological and social and emotional development. These programs include developing positive relationships, assertiveness and conflict resolution skills.

Peer Support & Year 7 Transition Programs

The Tutor Group comprises of students from Year 7 to 12 and delivers on a day to day basis an ideal environment to foster Peer Support to the individual student. Year 11 students work with Year 7 students on a weekly basis in Term 1 of each year, as part of our formal Year 7 Transition Program. Our senior students work through a series of activities with the junior students to give them a sense of belonging to our community and knowledge of how a secondary school operates.

Student Wellbeing Department

This department offers counselling for students and parents who feel the need for it. Student Wellbeing staff will also provide referral to a wide network of helpful and professional specialists.

Counselling within the College covers areas such as:

  • Grief and loss
  • Relationship issues
  • Family crisis /conflict
  • Self-esteem/Self-confidence development
  • Mental health issues
  • Adolescent problems
  • Anger management

The nature of the counselling is short-term, solution focused sessions. These services are available from our three counsellors.

Student Welfare Advisory Committee

The Student Welfare Advisory Committee (SWAC) consists of welfare staff and teaching staff who advise on the development and delivery of the Pastoral Care Programs to Students, Staff, Parents and the wider Community.

Student Leadership

Every student at St. Peter’s College experiences the opportunity to be involved in leadership.

In each Year Level students from Year 7 to 11 elect one leader to participate in Year Level Forums which meet on a fortnightly basis to discuss ideas and develop proposals to be heard at the Student Representative Council (SRC).

The Student Representative Council members are made up of our elected College Leaders and Forum Leaders who meet each month to discuss student issues and initiatives relating to all year levels.
